English Vinglish

English Vinglish...
Wasn't really planning to watch this one, then I read the reviews and the stars changed my mind...

The movie starts in the middle of a regular day for Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) with routine chores around the house for a cute little son and irritably annoying daughter and indifferent husband. Though I had hardly missed the titles, it made me feel like I had missed a good 15 mins story.

The story revolves around Shashi who is a middle aged housewife continuously ignored, made fun of and insulted for her bad English, who is very good at cooking and is famous in neighborhood for her ladoos. Between this regular humiliation and disrespect they receive an invitation for Meera's(Shashi's Niece) wedding in New York. Now Shashi has to go to New York alone to help her sister for the marriage while her husband and kids are scheduled to join in after a few weeks. She utilizes this time to enroll for an English Speaking course.

Here starts a new episode in her life, what with hiding this endeavor from the whole family and suddenly having a new goal in life to learn English to win back the respect and love she rightfully deserves from her own family. The class turns out to be fun with David-a Gay professor, Ramamurthy -South Indian Geek,  Salman Khan - Pakistani Showoff, Yu Son - Chinese cheek (whom Salman is hitting on from day 1), Odumbke - The Super silent Black guy (he does remind of me Kenyan Bowler), Eva - short for Spanish Extravaganza, and Laurent - The French Cook (who also doubles for admirer, friend, love interest, support, comfort cushion for Shashi).

Now her final exam and niece's weeding is on same date and she has to make a choice

How she makes her choice and what happens next is best watched on screen........

The Godbole family doesn't really look Marathi except the elderly Mrs. Godbole played by Sulbha Deshpande. In fact Sridevi the central character has accent, dressing sense and habits similar to a typical south Indian, her sister and niece look more like Punjabis, Except the song 'Navarai Majhi Ladachi' there is nothing Marathi about the film and the song too has a dhol as main instrument while the singer seems to have a Punjabi accent.

Sridevi has done her role beautifully - a good comeback, Adil Hussain does justice to his character as Satish (Shashi's reluctant husband), and so do the rest of characters. The guest appearance by Amitabh Bachhan is worth a browny point. Priya Anand (Shashi's other niece) seems to be the new emerging face to look for :).
The songs are nicely done and enrich the overall movie experience.

All in all don't miss-viss this one.
